Since the late 1800s, locally quarried yellow limestone has been popular throughout Perth and is particularly iconic of the Fremantle area. To a trained eye, limestone can tell the stories of the past, displaying certain geological stories from eras gone by, and often contains ancient fossils.

What causes limestone to degrade?

Limestone is durable (take at the Great Pyramid for example), but exposure to weather and atmospheric conditions can erode its integrity. Moisture is the biggest cause of limestone deterioration. Perth’s relatively high rainfall as well as the far-reaching salt spray from the Indian Ocean means the mortar can fret, and the stone can deteriorate and discolour.

How do we repair, treat and restore limestone?

Limestone resurfacing
We resurface limestone for waterproofing, greatly enhancing the stone’s resilience against the elements. We also offer aesthetic resurfacing services such as creating a honed finish.

Limestone wall stone replacement
For severely damaged limestone walls we can replace individual stones or replace whole sections of wall to blend seamlessly with the existing stones. Read more on limestone walls.

Limestone cleaning
Our effective but gentle process enhances the appeal of the stone, and treats against mould, mildew and moss, reducing moisture around the stone.

Limestone tuckpointing
Restore deteriorated limestone to its former glory. We carefully match the limestone’s natural colouring when repointing, coupled with thin black linework to contrast and shape the stones, or white linework for a more blended look. See also: tuckpointing.
